Greeneville Trip Three; the lost dpjenkins@charter.net post; notes on Peter Feicht in the 1920 census.

I didn’t do too much in the third trip, as the main reason to do was to capture the photograph of the “Conrad Girdner Obit” (see also here) that is all over the Internet presently. It is an article in the Greeneville Herald of May 1882 and a copy is in the T Elmer Cox library in Greeneville TN.

We did some tax studies in the period 1828-1832 and in the area you mostly find a Barnabas Myers and a Gabriel Myers. I’m pretty sure that Barnabas is the son of William Myers Jr but I’m not 100% sure that Gabriel Myers is the son of William Myers Sr, though I suspect he is. We also picked up a photo of the marriage license of Barnabas Myers.

I note that the old dpjenkins quote re: Myers of the early 18th century in Greene County has disappeared off ancestry and rootsweb. I suspect that it’s gone because of the reference to the now defunct Myers surname project. So, we’ll present the quote absent the stuff that’s no longer relevant.

There were about 5 different early Myers families in Greene Co., TN before 1810. They are all very difficult to trace before their arrival. Among them were:

1. The Myers on Cove Creek who were akin to the Girdners. This family intemarried with Kochers, Gables, and others. The progenitor is believed to be Wilhelm, aka William Myers, Sr., born approx. 1735 and came from Northhampton Co., PA (now Lehigh) where he was in the Rev. War. Most of these Myers moved on out of Greene Co., TN by the 1830’s.

2. Henry Myers (1777-1843) who married Elizabeth Trobaugh and whose descendants are well documented. There are still many of them in Greene County, TN. Henry had probable brothers who married his wife’s cousins: Frederick Myers (1789-1856) m. Mary Kerbaugh and moved to Harrison Co., IN, and John Myers (ca. 1785-1815) m. Caty Kerbaugh and had two daughters Polly and Eliza Myers I have been unable to trace.

Henry, Frederick & John Myers were likely the sons of Michael Myers (1750 – ?) who owned a farm adjoining Nicholas Trobaugh’s land in Augusta Co., Virginia at the time of Henry Myers marriage to Elizabeth Trobaugh. (Nicholas Trobaugh was the father of Elizabeth Trobaugh.)

This particular Michael Myers was believed to be the son of Frederick Meyer/Myers (1711-ca.1782) who immigrated from Germany in 1741 on the ship “Marlboro.” This family of Myers interacted with the Trobaughs before Nicholas Trobaugh left York Co., PA and after the move to Augusta Co., VA which I think increases the likelihood of a connection.

Frederick Meyer/Myers was the son of Hermann Meyer of Thal Lichtenberg, Kries Kusel, Germany. He married Barbara Schmidt and lived in Bedesbach, Kries Kusel, before the move to Pennsylvania.

3. Adam Myers who had a son named Peter who moved to West Tennessee and applied for a Rev. War Pension mentioning residence in Greene Co., TN.

4. The extremely large Gap Creek Myers family that intermarried with the Couch, Manis/Maness, West, and Rutherford families early on.

5. Henry Myers family who was born ca. 1784 in PA and lived on the Hawkins Co., TN line at Laurel Gap. His children include Anna Myers who married James Gardner.

DNA from male members of these Myers families could help tell if they all have the same remote ancestor. I have had my uncle and a couple of others in my line do this in an effort to get started.

The only factual error I know of in the above is that the part of Penn Township where William Myers lived is now part of Carbon County, not Lehigh. There is a map of his old land presented in this post.

The final comment of note is that the Feicht family, with which I have a very close Y67 match (I believe 65/67) has been associated with Wurrtemberg. Peter Feicht 1840-1921 is known to have come from Germany and in the 1920 US Census, says that he was born in Wurrtemberg.

The Pennsylvania Rambler and other Sugarloaf Massacre stories.

Recently found this link from the Pennsylvania Rambler blog and thought it was interesting. He make no mention of the Tom Varenna article, which predates his, so you can’t be sure he hasn’t read Varenna. That said, as a meditation on how stories change, the blog article is worth a read.

I’ve been trying to track down where George Kocher Sr died. His traditional date of passing is 17 September 1980, and that jibes well with this quote, found in The Pennsylvania Archives, Ser. 1, Vol. 8, (1907) 564-565, and quoted in the Wikipedia article on the burial attempt.

On the first notice of this unfortuned event the officers of the militia have Exerted themselves to get Volunteers out of their Respective Divissions to go up & Burry the Dead, their Labour Proved not in Vain we collected about 150 men & officers Included from the Colonels Kern, Giger & my own Battalions who would undergo the fatique & Danger to go their & pay that Respect to their slautered Brethren, Due to men who fell in support of the freedom of their Country. On the 15th we took up our line of march (want of amunation prevented us from going Sooner) on the 17th we arrived at the place of action, where we found Ten of our Soldiers Dead, Scalped, Striped Naked, & in a most cruel & Barborous manner Tomehawked, their throads Cut, &c. &c. whom we Buried & Returned without even seeing any of these Black alies, & Bloody executors of British Tirany….

There is a skirmish on the 17th and I can only assume that George Kocher Sr died as part of the burial party for the Sugarloaf massacre.

Visit to the genealogy library of Hopkins County TX. Notes on Elias Tidwell Myers (1821 – 1902)

The big genealogist in my family, prior to my uncle Thomas, was Wilbur Thomas Myers. A cousin of mine mentioned he left his genealogy notes to the Hopkins County Genealogical Society of Sulphur Springs TX, and so I visited there just recently. I was hoping I could find some things that would add to my understanding of the Texas Myers, and I did. It also enhanced what I knew about what Wilbur knew, and it allows me to make more sense of this man’s notes.

The first two things to share are excerpts from a book dated 1909.

I suspect that the Captain’s title is honorary, but all that said, the text adds a lot to my understanding of Elias. It gives times, shows that he arrives in Texas a lot wealthier than say, William Myers Jr. He arrives after Texas is a state, and later gets a land grant from the state of Texas on the order of 640 acres.

The final photo I wish to show gives what Wilbur thought was the path through the US of Charles Myers, and later Elias. Note he completely skips Greene County TN. In this telling he goes from PA to Giles County. Later I’m sure he becomes aware of Greene County, but far too late to change this essential story. Wilbur Thomas Myers passed away in 1998, two years before the opening of the T Elmer Cox library in Greene County.

Voices from down the Brandenburg line.

I have received a couple letters from Lara Day of Wisconsin, a vet and a genetic genealogy fan. I have an autosomal connection to her of 33 centimorgans, and using that and our public tree, found that we are related through the Brandenburgs. Elias Tidwell Myers, son of Charles Myers (1789-1857), married Nancy Ann Brandenburg on the 28th of November, 1839, in Lafayette Missouri.

I tend to think that the payoff for doing this kind of genealogy are the stories you receive, and in this case, Lara has a great one.

I didn’t know about Nancy Ann Brandenburg until I saw her on your tree and looked to see if others had her in the extensive Brandenburg line. I have matched other distant Brandenburg cousins, so we either have sticky segments that get passed down intact through the generations or we have a genetic disposition for genealogy research (or all both). The Brandenburg family has a lot of interesting history, some fact and some fiction. As a child, I remember my Grandmother telling me we were German royalty. As I got older, I found out we were supposedly descended from the Hohenzollern line (Frederick I and Frederick II “The Great”). During the late 1800s, a large number of the Brandenburg family met to plan on how to get their part of the estate in Germany. There are letters upon letters how money was collected for the supposed legal fees to get part of the estate supposedly worth $10,000,000. Sounds like the old fashioned version of the email scams we get in Spam. The scam was restarted in the 1900s, so more people gave money hoping for riches. Who knows how this rumor of Royalty got started, but it isn’t true, but the belief persists today. The truth is Matthias came over from The Palatinate sometime before 1764 when he married Hester Wolgamot (differing spellings) in then Frederick Co Maryland. They proceeded to have a large family and moved to VA then KY. Matthias was not a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but did supply leather goods to the Continental Army, so many have used this in their applications to DAR. Your ancestor, Samuel Brandenburg, was Matthias and Hester’s 6th child, born in VA and followed the rest of the family to KY. A younger brother, Solomon, started a ferry service in KY to cross the Ohio River. This ferry service prospered and a town was formed which became the Meade County seat. Matthias had died after a fall from a horse, and his widow Hester, moved with her son Solomon. She is buried on a hillside overlooking the Ohio river and her tombstone is in remarkably good condition.

Family Tree DNA is recalculating Big Y results

I only knew about this because of an email that began..

I will note that I got this email 10 days ago, so once again, Family Tree DNA has underestimated the effort required, in terma of how long this will take.

There is extensive discussion of the issue on Anthrogenica. Overall, I think the best approach is to be patient. People have noted the recalculation has changed terminal SNPs in certain cases. The standard for having a unique DNS change has also been adjusted. Again, dirty details are discussed in depth in the Anthrogenica thread.

The correspondence of Thomas Myers and Wilbur Thomas Myers

My cousin Marsha sent me seven letters from Wilbur Thomas Myers to Thomas Myers, my uncle, these letters covering a period between 1992 or so through 1997.  In the initial letter, Wilbur mentions he had been doing this since 1936, and had, by his accounting,

I have traveled tens of thousands of miles and spent in excess of $200,000.00 in trying to tie the end together.

Initially they knew there were a pair of Charles, and over time, it became clear to them both that “our” Charles was the one who had married Rebecca Williams. The other Charles had married Holly Hill. They were confused by the various correspondences, but noted that Elias Tidwell Myers had a son named William Henry Myers, and that Charles Jr had a son named William Myers. That said, they got the middle name wrong. Charles Jr’s son was William Hill Myers.

They then seemed to miss that this suggested that Charles Sr was an uncle of Charles Jr. All that said, the juxtaposition meant that they came awfully close to what is a very plausible theory.

In this period of time, the T Elmer Cox library didn’t exist, so they couldn’t use the Greene County resource the way later researchers, such as Wayne Myers, could. That they never were able to get at William Myers Sr seems a pity to me. They were very very very close.

Jesse Horne 1854-1934

Among my matches at 67 markers is a Mr Horne (removing his first name for privacy, as I’ve sent him email but haven’t heard from him as of yet), whose terminal relative is Jesse Horne 1854-1934. I didn’t pay much attention to this match, in part because it was a lesser match at 37 markers, with a diff of 3 at 37. At 67 markers, though, the diff is 4 and the match is thus closer.  So, I sent the man an email and then looked up what I could on Ancestry.

Jesse Horne 1854-1934 is matched to a man in the 1880 census in Shelby County, Tennessee. He is married at this time. In 1900 he is in the same county and state and now has several children. Unlike the previous census, they note that he can read and write and he says he was born in Kentucky. He claims his mother and father were born in Kentucky as well.

The same Ancestry source has a 1850 US Census entry for a possible father. This ‘Jessee Hornes’ is living in Perry County, TN, but a closer read of the census data shows that this Jessee Hornes claims to have been born in TN, about 1820.

In 1820 there are a fair number of Myers in Tennessee. By 1840 most of them are gone, to Missouri for the most part. But I can’t eliminate the possibility that a Cove Creek Myers (or close relative) fathered this Jessee Hornes, or alternatively, was the parent of Jessee Hornes’s father. In fact the few times I’ve looked at a TIP calculation of these possibilities, those odds were substantial.

And if the father is actually born in Kentucky, I’ll note, as just one example, that David Crockett’s autobiography speak of various traveling Myers selling wares out of Greene County, Tennessee.

To note, this match may be a product of luck. If I had any advice for a male Horne who is a direct descendant of Jesse 1854-1934, it would be to get an accurate YDNA haplotype. A P312 test at YSEQ is pretty cheap. Z39300+ tests don’t exist in isolation, and someone would have to decide if the $600 or so for a BIGY would be worth it. And if the Horne males are P312+, they can join the P312 project at ftDNA, and then let the experts there guide the search. I will note that my line of Myers YDNA is rare. If we are matched, it will stick out like a sore thumb on the BIGY test.

Update: While I didn’t initially realize it, ‘Horn’ can be a German name. Horn and variants of Horn (Hornung, Hornberger, etc) can be parsed from Pennsylvania German Pioneers. My first try picked up about 92 males with ‘Horn’ or some variant thereof. So one possibility, which I hadn’t initially considered, is that a common ancestor, if he exists, would be found on the other side of the Atlantic. A German Horn would come to the states in the 18th century, and migrate to Kentucky in the late 18th, early 19th century.

Greeneville TN visit number two. Some conclusions.

I decided to make a quick dash to Greeneville on a Saturday, to make sure I could clear up some loose ends. The agenda list was as follows:

1. Photo of Charles Myers Sr being made administrator.
2. Nancy Carter Will. Did she sign it?
3. William Myers Nancy Carter marriage deed.
4. 1805 tax rolls. George Moyers in same district as the Williams?
5. 1798-1800 Charles Myers Sr apprenticeship.
6. Conrad Girdner obit. A photo
7. John Myers land sales 1802-1806.

Some things were missed. The 1805 data, the T Elmer Cox librarian told me, was not provided by them, but by a third party online who claimed to be them. They didn’t have the originals. We could not find evidence of apprenticeship in the 1798-1800 time frame. We did not find the Nancy Carter will in the time we looked. I did take a photo of the Conrad Girdner obit but lost the data when I tried to rotate the image while still on the camera. It was a mistake I’ll not make again.

I found that deeds are on microfilm/fiche and thus have to be printed from the microfilm, using a combination printer/photocopier. That’s the form I have a 1805 deed by John Myers in.

These things are important details as the tax rolls do not distinguish between Charles Myers, the owner of 19 acres of land in 1815, and Charles Myers, administrator of the William Myers Jr estate. Yet they distinguish between William Myers Jr and Sr.

Some things do not go away. While Charles Myers Jr buys a lot of items from William Myers Jr, Charles Myers Sr buys just a few items. Four I recall are a drawing knife, an oven with lid, a crock full of fat and a spelling book. The spelling book sticks out because by this time, Charles Myers Sr’s first daughter would be around three years old. Also around this time, Charles Myers Sr is made the guardian of Elizabeth Myers, so we have solid evidence that he’s in Greene County in 1815, and close to the Cove Creek Myers. The other three guardians were Solomon Wilhoite, John Cook Sr, and Charles Myers Jr.

We looked at signatures of William Myers Sr, and the conclusion we drew is that people must be signing for him, as his signature is different every time we look at it. The y umlaut of the Barnabas Gable marriage deed is not duplicated anywhere else.

The John Myers sale is interesting. The 235 acres of land he sells are adjacent to the Girdners on one end and to the Parmans on another. Conrad Girdner mentions a widow Parman in his obit.

I’m trying to figure out why Wayne Myers assigned the administrator to Charles Sr. My only guess would be the absence of any identifier after the name. If you look further down the image, A Fredrick Myers passes and his wife is made administrator, and the document explicitly names her as his wife. Perhaps Wayne reasoned that if Charles Myers Jr was made administrator, that his status as first born son of William would have been mentioned.

Charles Myers Sr, Charles Myers Jr, and the 1830 US Census

In 1830, doing a US Census search on Ancestry, you can’t find Charles Myers Sr, but you can find Charles Marwer. Looking at the actual census page, it’s easy to see that Charles Marwer is actually Charles Myers Sr. Further down the page, you can also see Charles Myers Jr, though his name has been butchered in ways I can’t entirely figure out.

On the image above, Charles Myers Jr is the lowest of the rows, while Charles Sr is about third from the top. There are three women with Jr, and while we know the name of the son, (William Hill Myers, buried in Cass County along with Jr and Sr), I do not know the name of Charles’s three daughters.

Of the two men with Charles Sr, the younger is Elias, and the older is undoubtedly an apprentice.

Getting a workable list of Germans who enter the port of Philadelphia in the 18th century.

We’ll start with a web site called German Roots, as looking here has been the most useful place to date.  They have a subpage, named “Finding Passenger Lists before 1820” and this is where we will head next.  They then discuss a book named “Pennsylvania German Pioneers” and it is in three volumes. The first volume is an index. The second are the actual passenger lists from volume one, and this volume has to be purchased. The third volume starts in 1785 and is outside of our specific interests.

Volumes one and three can be downloaded in PDF form, and a quick look will soon convince you that trying to work through all the data (over 800 pages in volume one) would be back breaking work. That said, in 2014 a text version of the first volume was created and if you download that, then you have a shot at using a computer program to parse the text and dump the parsed data into a database. If I’m able to do that, I’ll let the readers of this blog know. I have usable skills in Perl and Python, so this isn’t impossible. The trick will be writing a smart enough parser that the output is usable and not garbage.

Update. I was able to write something that works, and create a Myers list from the raw text data listed above. The list is (in CSV format):
